Synopsis and Art Style

The focus of The Marten Hoyle Project (the initials of which stand for Mental Health Problems) is literature. The books themselves are a sort of centerpiece—a main attraction for the visual and musical media. If Marten’s style could be described as anything, it would be “classical.” Readers have stated that Marten’s work seems to come from another time. Whether that time is the past or the future, Marten is not sure.

Marten considers himself a Tragedian. His work consists primarily of tragic soliloquies in verse that are an ongoing narrative of the voice in his mind that offered the designation of, “Vate C. Carmen.” All of Marten’s art is connected. Though there may not be any direct sequels to future endeavors, all of his books (whether self or traditionally published) and all media that they create as companions to the books are connected to one another as a continuing narration that will not end until the day they die. In many ways, it is an ongoing tale of terror. Marten will say that he does not romanticize any of the subject matter—most of it centering around the topic of death, namely suicide. It is a horrifying experience to live with their disease (schizophrenia) which comes with suicidal ideation. If Marten’s doing anything it is attempting to take the hideousness of Schizophrenia and make it into something that others can relate to. But the end goal is survival. The main reason why Marten creates is to make it from point A (the moment they wake up) to point B (the moment they go to sleep) each day without collapsing either into psychosis of suicide. It is all written to survive.

Marten’s Inspiration

The figures who have inspired Marten more than any others are Anna-Varney Cantodea, Edgar Allan Poe, Charles Baudelaire, and H.P. Lovecraft Other tremendously gifted influences have come and gone, but those are the figures that Marten turns to most often when he thinks of whose work has had the greatest impact upon him. Not all of them are necessarily literary or poetic. Marten’s father was an illustrator and was his first influence…and a great deal of his earlier influences were visual artists such as H.R.

Giger and Salvador Dali. But really—just about every work of art Marten has come across influences him in some way. Marten claims that he has never really encountered something that did not move him (or Vate) to create.

Where does Marten’s pen reside?

Marten does not really have any answer to that question. He says, “If it’s anywhere, it is not within the confines of anything in my dimensional perception. Vate exists in a place that I cannot reach. I have called it Mettray, but really it is a place I have no knowledge of.

I do not go to Vate. Vate comes to me. And I never know when it will come. Vate has been a constant companion all my life. At first, it had a silly name. One that I will not share. Later in life, it became known as, “Leon” and then it evolved into Vate C. Carmen just a few years ago. But I have never been able to go to the place where Vate resides. Even in my moments of psychosis, it is a place to which I have no access. Again—I do not go there. The voice comes to me.”

What people are saying about Voces Animarum

Marten Hoyle's book is both riveting and mind-bending. If you don’t mind a bit of a scare, dare to read but be weary for you might find yourself lost in your own madness.

~Pita Black of Cranberree Ink.

The story of Voces Animarum documents the journey and struggles of the character to break the chains that bind him. The chains are placed there by none other than himself. What is the true identity of this character? Will he discover his true origins and free his mind from the prison of mental health? Can love for himself find him in time to forgive himself of that which is beyond his control, to free his spirit from pain and affliction? Self-love and acceptance can seem narrowly impossible. This is the story of one’s effort to achieve such an impossible feat.

~Joseph Mykut, author of Beautiful Boy.

A little about voces animarum

(...)

A letter—anonymously penned, details a journey through a landscape of terrifying possibilities. Voces Animarum welcomes you to walk the thin line between reality and nightmare. But, don’t think for a moment that Vate C. Carmen is going to allow you to simply walk a straight narrative line. No! At moments, the reader will be directed to step into the evils of one realm, and then into the horrors of another. Sometimes, the reader will be directed to both places simultaneously…and, be sealed within an echo chamber of tortured souls. For some, this is familiar territory. It is a sphere traversed by a psychologically sensitive minority.

Limited Edition Signed copies

With Voces Animarum now available for purchase, there are two options by which Martenoids can receive a limited edition signed copy.

Option 1 is the book in an envelope with one very special feature: A Unit A-17 transcript written in red ink in an envelope accented with a beautiful wax seal of the (…) logo. There are 150 Envelope Packages, and they are $50.00 each.

Option 2 is the Voces Animarum Black Box package.

The Black Boxes are handcrafted with a "Vate C. Carmen" sticker logo and a hand-written (...) symbol in gold or silver ink.

Inside the Box is (naturally) a signed copy of Voces Animarum in a crudely stitched "straitjacket" canvas sleeve that has a black wax-seal with the (...) logo. The "jacket" is then bound with a homemade belt. The idea is to "free" the book from its confines. The belts are fashioned in likeness of a backpack, or perhaps a seatbelt…which the reader will find appropriate upon reading the novel.

The book comes in a dossier folder that bears a red Unit A-17 stamp. The dossier is decorated with paper and exquisite nylon roses. The roses are sealed onto the dossier with black wax. The roses come in black, purple-and-black, red, pink or purple and the paper roses come in red, pink, white or black. The Dossier is then bound with jute rope wiring. You will find the reason behind the roses within the book.

Along with the book itself in the Dossier (which will be placed on top of a crude duck cloth lining in the box) is a signed, hand-written Unit A-17 transcript that is written with red ink. The whole black box comes in a USPS Priority Mail Package. But the box itself is wrapped in postal shipping paper with an Eglantine Home for the Poetically Unsound seal.

The Black Box Package is $75.00.
